LONDON. — Liverpool have made contact with Carlo Ancelotti over the possibility of replacing Brendan Rodgers, according to reports.

Real Madrid sacked Ancelotti on Monday night after a trophy-less season.

The Italian is now expected to take time off to deal with a back problem. But reports in Spain insist that Liverpool have got in touch with the former Chelsea man about taking over the reins at Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers admitted his job was in doubt after the final day 6-1 thrashing by Stoke.

But it was thought Liverpool’s owners were ready to keep faith with the Northern Irishman.

According to Spanish paper Marca, however, an approach has been made to Ancelotti.

It is claimed that despite Ancelotti’s plans for a break, Liverpool are the only club that could persuade the 55-year-old to change his mind.

Liverpool will also step up their attempts to sign Christian Benteke after the Aston Villa striker has played in the FA Cup Final.

Anfield officials have an established working relationship with Villa’s director of recruitment, Paddy Reilly, who only moved back to the Midlands in November following a spell working at Liverpool.

Benteke is thought to have a clause in his contract which will trigger his departure if activated – various sums in excess of £20m have been reported – and Liverpool will seek to move quickly on their first choice transfer target ahead of a pivotal summer. — The Daily Express.
