A Harare man who has been robbing and raping women in Marondera while armed with a hoe, has been jailed for an effective 30 years by a Marondera magistrate. Anything Shadaya (30) from Overspill in Epworth, pleaded guilty to four counts of rape and robbery. He was nabbed in Epworth and appeared before Mr Clever Tsikwa who sentenced him to 37 years behind bars.

Mr Tsikwa set aside seven years on condition of good behaviour, leaving Shadaya with 30 years to serve. Mr Tsikwa applauded Marondera police for apprehending Shadaya whom he said was terrorising Marondera residents.

“The convicted person committed serious offences, which attract a lengthy prison term. “He travelled all the way from Epworth to commit offences in Marondera which shows that the offences were premeditated,” he said.

“We thank the investigating officer from Marondera police for a job well done because all the offences were committed at night, but they managed to account for him in Epworth away from Marondera.”

The prosecution proved that on May 24 last year at around 3am, Shadaya hatched a plan to commit offences in Marondera and proceeded to Ruzawi Park area. He scaled over the pre-cast wall and used his hoe to break the kitchen door to gain entry.

He confronted two women aged 16 and 26 who were sleeping in the house. Shadaya assaulted them with the hoe and broke one of the woman’s hand in the process. He ordered the women into one room where he took turns to rape them while others watched.

Shadaya raped them while placing his hoe on their necks. He then demanded cash and was given $10,50 and two mobile phones. He then disappeared in the dark. Sometime in October at around midnight, another complainant (name not given) heard some footsteps outside her house.

She peeped through the window and saw Shadaya standing on her dining window. She then screamed for help and Shadaya broke the window using the hoe. He threatened to kill and rape the woman before ordering her to remain quiet.

He ransacked her house and stole $80 cash, mobile phone, clothes, blankets and two pints of beer which were in the fridge.

He loaded the loot in the woman’s monarch and went away.
