Pupils face arrest over school break-in

Hazyview. — A group of pupils in Mpumalanga are facing possible arrest after being accused of breaking school windows and stealing equipment. Masoyi police spokesperson, Nanikie Nonyane, told a News24 correspondent yesterday that pupils from Bhekiswako Secondary School in the Bhekiswako village near Hazyview allegedly vandalised the school in retaliation for a police raid that unearthed dagga and a knife on the premises.

“Police have a list of 15 pupils that will be arrested after they allegedly damaged the school windows, stealing school calculators, cellphones, (and) bank cards of an educator in the library during the break-in on Thursday last week,” said Nonyane.

Nonyane said the cellphones that were stolen from the principal’s office were those earlier

confiscated from pupils as the use of mobile devices has been banned at the school.

She said the police were conducting a random search at the school and found the cellphones hidden in pupils’ bags.

“During the random search that led to this break-in we found a small box of a dagga lying on the floor, a knife belonging to a pupil and plus or minus 300 cellphones from the pupils.

“The cellphones will be issued to the parents because the policy of the school does not allow pupils to have cellphones during school hours. Police have opened a case of malicious damage and theft,” she said.

Some of the pupils, who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation, said they are surprised the school’s management cared more about having their cellphones confiscated than raising funds to build the pupils a library.

Some students claimed they were using their cellphones to Google information on subject matter. — News24.
