Thousands of people thronged various venues throughout the country yesterday to mark the 34th Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day where provincial ministers read President Mugabe’s speech and the public was treated to displays by the army.
There was a bumper crowd at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo where people were treated to various entertainment activities lined to mark the event.
Proceedings started just after 8am when a mass parade composed of men and women from 4 Infantry Brigade accompanied by colourful drum majorettes marched from Chikato police station to the stadium.

Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Kudakwashe Bhasikiti inspected the parade accompanied by commander 4 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Chancellor Diye.

Mutimurefu Prison traditional dance group entertained the crowd.
In Mashonaland West, thousands thronged Chinhoyi Stadium where they were entertained by Zimbabwe National Army and Airforce of Zimbabwe officers through displays.

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Faber Chidarikire inspected a parade mounted by the ZDF before reading the President’s speech.
Helicopter displays, coming to Chinhoyi for the first time in years, were the most popular with the crowd.

In Manicaland, the major celebrations were held at Sakubva Stadium which was filled to capacity.
A number of groups, including the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services’ Ecos Dance Group and Mansa, the Sakubva and Dangamvura Zanu-PF women’s choirs, Aqua Gymnastics Group, Chinyauhera Traditional Dance Group and Dhumatasangana Traditional Dance Group entertained the crowd.

For Bulawayo, scores of residents thronged Barbourfields Stadium where Provincial Affairs Minister for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Cde Eunice Moyo read the President’s speech after inspecting a parade mounted by ZNA members.

Entertainment came from various groups. In Mashonaland East, hundreds of people thronged Rudhaka Stadium where Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Simbaneuta Mudarikwa also inspected a parade before reading President Mugabe’s speech.

Entertainment was provided by various drama and arts groups, while a soccer match featuring teams from youths drawn from the province was held later on in the day.

The Midlands had its main celebrations at Mkoba Stadium where a war veterans’ choir and poets Dumisani Ndlovu and son Lesson provided entertainment.
Guest of honour, Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Jason Machaya inspected a parade composed of three battalions before reading President Mugabe’s speech. Kwekwe based Five Brigade Traditional Dance group stole the show through a flawless performance.

In Matabeleland South Province, people from all walks of life converged at Phelandaba Stadium in Gwanda where celebrations kicked off around 8.30am.
Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Abedinico Ncube officiated at the proceedings which were attended by senior security officials.

People turned out in their numbers to mark the day at a colourful event held at Chipadze Stadium in Mashonaland Central where Provincial Affairs Minister Advocate Martin Dinha inspected a guard of honour before reading President Mugabe’s speech.
