Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo, has commended Danhiko Vocational/Technical Training Centre for promoting practical skills development that he says provide a platform for the growth of the country’s economy.

Prof Moyo said this on Monday night when he visited the institution as part of his countrywide tour of higher and tertiary education institutions.

“This industrial training centre is the most visible (among others in the country). Your visibility is a case study for others. Your visibility is not a public relations product, it is not because you are supported by the First Lady. It is because you are an excellent institution and that excellence speaks for itself as one sets his foot here,” Prof Moyo said.

He added that the institution was making world class products, especially in textiles.

“You have a textile department that is doing amazing things.

“The stuff that comes out competes with that from Kenya, Ghana or any other West African country that make this material. The foundation of any country or economy is made up of the skills of its artisans and these are the skills that you are developing. These are the skills that the majority of people should have.

“We commend you for the fantastic work which speaks for itself and this is what higher and tertiary education is all about at the level of skills which not only hold the economy but to inspire the economic transformation of the nation,” he said.

Danhiko is an integrated institution that caters for people living with disabilities and provides training in clothing technology, information technology, wood technology and electronics among others.

Its products are sold to local retailers and exported to sadc countries and European nations like France.

The institution also has an arrangement with Bata Shoe Company where it produces shoes on its behalf.
