A least 10 primary schools from Harare and its surrounds were incorporated at this year’s edition of the Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival that ends today at Prince Edward School. The tournament included traditional rugby playing schools like Avondale, Borrowdale, Highlands, Lewisam, Blackiston, Lendy Park newcomers Gwinyai, Chipindura, ZRP Braeside, and Selborne Routledge.The inaugural edition that was partnered by Manhattans Leisure saw Highlands Primary School walking away 17-10 winners over Gwinyai Primary in the final.

Chipindura Primary scooped the third place after they dismissed favourites Borrowdale 12-5.

Highlands captain Veron Mudunguri (11) expressed his team’s excitement.

“We are happy to have won the first trophy of at the inaugural primary schools rugby tournament. The preparations we made before this tournament made us a better team and so we won our first trophy,” he said.

He said the school is determined to become a fixture at the tournament and other rugby competitions.

“It’s an honour for us and we hope to continue defending our title anytime and anywhere, we are ready to come back next year and defend it too,” he said.

Gwinyai Primary eighth man, Tawanda Shoriwa said they were a good side said despite losing in the final.

“We came to the festival on a learning curve because this was our first time to play rugby as a school, we won with quite a margin in most matches and that only means we are a good team.

“Losing in the final was an achievement for the team and we hope to build a better side next year,” he said.

Festival director Tawanda Jimu commended the efforts by local schools in identifying young talent even as young as primary school goers who played wonderful rugby at the tournament.

Dairibord Zimbabwe marketing manager Sandra Dodo promised that this year’s primary schools tournament was only a beginning of a new era at the festival.
