University of Zimbabwe Chancellor President Mugabe will today confer degrees to 3 451 graduates from the institution at a ceremony that coincides with its 60th anniversary. In an interview yesterday, UZ Vice Chancellor Professor Levi Nyagura said he was happy with the improvement in the pass rate at the institution.

“Tomorrow is a big day for us,” he said. “We have our graduation ceremony coinciding with our 60 years of existence, hence we will be celebrating our 60th anniversary.

“We will be presenting for conferment of degrees for 3 451 graduates. And from this lot, we do have 2 812 graduates getting their first degrees, 602 graduates receiving masters’ degrees, 18 receiving master of philosophy degrees, and we also have 14 graduates who will be receiving their doctor of philosophy degrees.”

Prof Nyagura said the country would benefit from the new group of professionals.

“The interesting thing is that the country has got key areas where human resources are needed like in the medicine industry,” he said. “We will be presenting 91 new medical doctors, seven dental doctors and 50 pharmacists.

“We also have 124 engineers, 93 agricultural experts, 389 accountants for the business sector and 136 lawyers being presented with their degrees tomorrow (today).”

Prof Nyagura said he was impressed with the increasing number of students who had acquired first class passes this year.

“The most interesting thing among the undergraduates is that we have 101 first class passes which is a record since this institution started in 1955,” he said. “And the other interesting thing, it will be the greatest pleasure for the Chancellor to present degrees to females who constitute 44,3 percent of these graduates. We are happy that the numbers of females is rising. So, for us, that is a major contribution as it means that we are making lots of efforts to empower women.”

The ceremony will be held at the University of Zimbabwe grounds.
