The Charambas thrill revellers at the Police Commissioner-General’s Funfair on Saturday

It was an unforgettable day of fun at Police Commissioner-General’s Funfair that was held at the Morris Depot on Saturday. Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri and his wife Dr Isabel graced the event that saw Sekai Madondo from ZRP Mutare Rural going away driving a Ford Ranger double cab, Alois Masamba from Victoria Falls taking home a Honda Fit while Ritchard Masuku from Harare won a generator.

Several other people won different prizes at the draw that was conducted at the function. This year’s edition attracted thousands of people who were entertained by several musicians. There was fun on stage, in the police display arena and among the audience. Children were given rare treats as they took turns to have bike rides, police car rides, swimming and jumping castle among other things.

Outside the venue long queues were the order of the day till sunset as fans streamed to the event. Dancehall star Tocky Vibes, Pastor Charles and Olivia Charamba, Alick Macheso, Jah Prayzah, Sniper, Biggie Tembo Junior, Peter Moyo, Rocky, Trevor Dongo, the Police B and veteran afro-jazz musician Bob Nyabinde among others performed at the event.

Tocky Vibes was the first to take the stage and the musician belted out most of his hit songs. Performing with live band, the musician played songs such as “Ndinouya”, “Toti Toti”, “Mhai” “Musaite Rudo Rwekumanikdza” and “ Simudza Maoko” among others. Macheso took the stage and played songs such as “Madhawu”, “Shedia” and sampled one song from his forth- coming album much to the delight of the fans.

Sniper managed to thrill fans with most of his hit songs. He took fans down memory lane when he played one of his oldest songs “Kuginyabvura”. The Charambas, who are arguably the best gospel couple in Zimbabwe, managed to keep the event alive. Commissioner-General Chihuri joined the Charambas on stage dancing as they showed their gratitude to thousands of people who turned out to support the event.

Man of the moment Jah Prayzah left fans yearning for more as he belted out songs from his latest album “Jerusarema”. Organisers of the event said they were happy to host such a successful event that will see more than 400 underprivileged children benefiting. At the beginning of the show the master of ceremonies had jokingly told people that it was a day to drink beer in police premises without fear of being ar- rested.

Some of the merrymakers obviously took the emcee’s word seriously and got sloshed in the early stages of the event and spent the better part of the day lying dead drunk. It was quite a refreshing funfair.
