“hired” by armed robbers in separate night time incidents.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau, yesterday urged taxi drivers to be wary of criminals targeting them.
In one of the incidents, a taxi driver was hired near a hotel in the city to Westgate after being duped by a lone gunman who claimed that he wanted to collect some goods.
When they approached the roundabout near Westgate Shopping Centre, the armed robber ordered the driver to stop, before asking for the driver’s cellphone so that he could make a call.
“The driver complied and the armed robber made a call before ordering him to drive back to the city centre,” Insp Sabau said.
It is alleged that along the way, near Kensington Shopping Centre, the armed robber produced a pistol before stealing the vehicle.
Insp Sabau said another taxi driver was also hired near Copacabana Bus Terminus by a lone gunman who said he was going to Waterfalls before he was robbed of his vehicle and US$20 at gunpoint.
The third one was hired by two armed robbers from the city centre to Sunningdale 3 where he was robbed of his vehicle and US$150 cash.
Insp Sabau said the robbers dumped the vehicle near Manyame River Bridge where it was recovered.
In March this year, police expressed concern over an increase in the number of taxi drivers who were being robbed after being “hired” by armed robbers in and around Harare.
Some vehicles have also been hijacked after their owners or drivers offer lifts to criminals who pretend to be stranded commuters.
