The police came under fire from Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe last week for “flagrantly” disregarding a court order to release a suspect.

Mr Mahwe was not happy after an accused Tariro Mundawarara (29) whom he had denied further detention, was taken back to police cells.

The investigating officer Detective Farai Zindoga had brought Mundawarara to court seeking further detention to enable more investigations, but Mr Mahwe dismissed the application and ordered that Mundawarara be released. Instead of releasing him, the police took him back to the cells and brought him to court again.

Mr Mahwe called Det Zindoga to explain why Mundawarara was not released after further detention application was denied.

“We agreed with him to organise transport to Chegutu at the police station,” said Det Zindoga.

Det Zindoga said there was an error on the part of police details at the cells.

Mr Mahwe ordered prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa to bring Det Insp Nemaisa to court to explain why the court order was ignored.

But Det Insp Nemaisa did not turn up, prompting Mr Mahwe to remove Mundawarara from remand and told him that he will be called back to court by way of summons.

Mundawarara was facing charges of unlawfully discharging a firearm in a public place.
