A 39-year-old Harare man has been arrested after he was found in possession of 217kg of buffalo meat worth over $6 500. Kennedy Chishambwa was arrested last Friday in Epworth following a tip off.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Ms Caroline Washaya-Moyo confirmed the arrest.

“The meat is valued at $6 510. Kennedy Chishambwa is now in custody and assisting with investigations. He is facing charges of selling game meat without a permit,” she said.

Chishambwa is believed to be part of a syndicate involved in poaching.

In November 2013, five villagers were jailed for periods ranging from four to 14 years each, for illegal possession of cyanide and killing 10 elephants in Ngamo Safaris in Lupane.

Hwange provincial magistrate Mrs Rosemary Dube sentenced Johannes Mukombwe (29) and Mkhululi Ncube (36) all from Lupane to 14 years each in prison for poaching elephants.

She further sentenced Mukombwe and Ncube to a further four years in prison each, for illegal possession of cyanide under the Environmental Management Agency Act.
