LONDON. — Pep Guardiola is embroiled in the toughest fight of his managerial career at Bayern Munich — and one which could impact on the English Premier League.

Guardiola could do no wrong at former club Barcelona where he won all the major silverware including the Champions League (twice), La Liga (three times) and the Spanish Cup (twice).

While Barcelona were involved in another Champions League final in Berlin Guardiola was wondering what his next move should be at Munich.

The season has ended in turmoil despite another Bundesliga title having been safely gathered under the Spaniard’s leadership.

But that is the basic requirement at the Allianz Arena, Bayern’s financial largesse having virtually annexed the top domestic prize.

So although Guardiola ticked that box the hierarchy which includes German luminaries like Franz Beckenbauer (President) and football board members Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Matthias Sammer are believed to have concerns over how the campaign finished.

Bayern were knocked out of the German Cup by Borussia Dortmund and lost 5-3 on aggregate to Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final just 12 months after a 5-0 aggregate hammering by Real Madrid at the same stage of the competition.

There were also some disappointing defeats in the League although the title had by then been sewn up.

More worryingly for a club which prides itself on projecting German players there has been a fall out between Guardiola and two of them, experienced midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and World Cup winning striker Thomas Muller. — The Daily Express.
