Parliament resumes sitting Legislators follow proceedings during the first sitting of the First Session of the Eighth Parliament of Zimbabwe while standing in the aisles owing to an acute shortage of sitting space in the National Assembly yesterday.

Both Houses of Parliament resume sitting today after a brief one-week break following the official opening of the Fifth Session of the Eighth Parliament by President Mugabe last week. This would be the last session before the dissolution of Parliament ahead of next year’s harmonised elections. Today’s debates are expected to be dominated by parliamentarians’ response to the speech by President Mugabe during the official opening.

In his address outlining the legislative agenda for the Session where at least 25 Bills are expected to be brought to Parliament, President Mugabe also expressed Government’s commitment to improve the country’s economic environment to attract investment.

Some of the Bills expected to be debated during this session include the Public Entities and Corporate Governance Bill Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill and the Mineral Exploration and Marketing Corporation Bill Insolvency Bill, the Judicial Laws Amendment Bill, the Estate Administrators Bill, the Shop Licences Bill and the Labour Law Amendment Bill.

Other Bills include the Mandatory Sentencing for Rape and Sexual Abuse Bill, Coroner’s Bill, the Disaster Risk Management Bill, the Cooperating Societies Amendment Bill the Land Developers Bill, the Cyber Crime and Cyber Security Bill, the Electronic Transactions and Electronic Commerce Bill and the Data Protection Bill and the Teaching Professions Council Bill among others.
