Parishioner assaulted by robbers at church

According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday last week. It is understood Mr Kenneth Mapanda drove to the church where he was due to join fellow parishioners for evening prayers.

He stopped at the main gate which was shut. As he waited for it to be opened, three men posing as lost travellers approached him.
One of them suddenly struck him in the head with an iron bar while another dragged him out of the Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle.

The third man produced a pistol, as his colleagues continued the assault. They then took the car keys and sped off in the vehicle, leaving Mr Mapanda bleeding profusely.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesman Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara said other parishioners later ferried him to hospital after discovering him in agony.
A police report was also made.

“Our units are investigating the case; it is, however, still premature to reveal our findings,” he said.
“Mr Mapanda is still in hospital and is in a critical condition as a result of the beating.”
Insp Mabgweazara urged motorists to be wary of strangers following an upsurge in carjacking in the last few months.

Police say carjackers seem to be targeting high-terrain vehicles such as Toyota Land Cruisers and Prados, all of which have a ready market in countries such as Mozambique, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They believe armed robbers have, on the other hand, turned to smaller vehicles for use in their escapades.
Carjacking is also prevalent in countries like South Africa where the government has erected warning signs on highways indicating hotspots.-Sunday Mail
