The Office of President and Cabinet has established a high level coordination committee which will guide the implementation of various climate change initiatives to ensure that the country meets its obligations under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. This comes as President Mugabe, in April joined other world leaders in signing the Paris Agreement on Climate Change at the United Nations headquarters in New York, US.

Under the agreement, Zimbabwe pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 percent.

In an interview at a Climate Change Mitigation/Education, Training and Awareness Report Back Workshop currently underway here, Climate Change Department director, Mr Washington Zhakata, said the Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate would chair a supporting technical committee.

“The Office of President and Cabinet, after looking at the multi-sectoral nature of the discipline and also the need to ensure that the country meets its obligations under the Paris Agreement established a high level coordination committee on climate change that will guide implementation of various climate change mitigation, actions as well as adaptation actions in the country.

“This committee is supported by a technical committee which is chaired by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate,” he said.
