OLD Johannians suffered their first defeat of the season in the Northern Super Rugby League following a 59-8 hiding by Old Georgians and coach Max Madziva believes this was a reality check.

The Johannians side, who are still new in the league, were humiliated by the experienced Groombridge side, who are under the guidance of Grant Mitchell.

Madziva said they knew it was going to be a very tough fixture.

“We always knew it was going to be a big task for our boys but it gave us a very good platform to work from,” said Madziva.

“The game was always going to come down to conditioning and the experienced OGs were better than us.

“I was very encouraged by my boys, beside their defeat, and very proud because for such a new and inexperienced club, to have two wins and only one defeat means they are a good team.

“So far we have recorded two wins and one defeat so I believe we will be a very good side in the future.”

The leading side in the championship race, Harare Sports Club, maintained their dominance after thrashing hosts Mutare 50-10.

While Sports Club are still unbeaten, Old Hararians are also bubbling after their 26-8 victory over Police.

Old Hararians assistant coach, Derek Chiwara, praised his men.

“We are getting there, this is just the beginning, we have managed to get a second win, which is good.

“We started this year’s league programme by playing competitive sides,” said Chiwara.
