AFTER posting a good show at the 2012 London Olympic Games when he came seventh in the men’s marathon, Cuthbert Nyasango is hopeful of another fine performance at this year’s Games in Brazil next month. Nyasango, a seasoned long-distance runner, finished seventh in 2012 in 2 hours 12 minutes 8 seconds and he will be making his second straight appearance at the Olympics together with Wirimai Juwawo, who also had a good outing in 2012 when he ran 2 hours 14 minutes 9 seconds to finish 15th.

Nyasango said his training programme is on schedule and is geared up for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. “The preparations have been going well. I have no qualms, we are on schedule and we are just hoping the last three weeks will be okay. The last three months were okay, I have no complaints and no injuries to worry about. I am healthy, fit and ready to go.

“Now we are like tapping down, we are reducing on our mileage, focusing more on speed, rest and a lot of eating and enjoying ourselves, that’s more important at the moment,” said Nyasango.

Nyasango said he is looking forward to putting up his best performance in Brazil although it’s going to be a different competition altogether. Zimbabwe will field a team of three runners in the men’s marathon section — Nyasango, Wirimai Juwawo and United States-based Pardon Ndhlovu.
