Nyari Mashayamombe yesterday released her music single titled ‘‘Cry’’, which features the late Chiwoniso Maraire. The song, which talks about ‘‘girl child abuse’’, was recorded in 2012 and set for release the following year but was delayed because of Chiwoniso’s death.

In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, Nyari said she delayed release of the song to give the family time to mourn the mbira legend.

“It is my song and I featured Chiwoniso, so I didn’t want people to say I am riding on Chiwoniso’s popularity and having some thinking that it would be a breakthrough after the passing of Chiwoniso. You know very well how it is, people will start to talk.

‘‘The song creates an awareness on the circumstances that surround potential victims of abuse before it occurs and is a wake-up call to everyone to watch out and pay attention to their environment to give childrena safe environment to grow up in, free from sexual abuse,” she said.

The gender activist said the song after inspired by societal problems.

“The song will be played on local radio stations, international radio station, and will serve as a guideline to different organisations and responsible authorities on how they can tackle the issue.

‘‘As you know, music has the power of influence, hence I chose to use it to ignite and empower the community so that what is happening has a solution,” she said.

She said the song will be sold on online platforms as well.

“The song will go on sale on international online sales platforms like CDBaby and iTunes among many others. This will enable international fans and supporters to purchase the song,” she said.

Nyari added that part of proceeds from the sales will go to charity.

Nyari is not new in the music sector with two gospel albums to her name and prior collaborations with music icons such as the late Cephas Mashakada.

The first album is entitled “Nekusingaperi” while the second is “Zvakasungwa” which also talks about advocating for social justice for the rights of girls, young women, youths and women in a Christian way.

Nyari said was working on the video for the single which will be released anytime soon.
