Residents in Kariba’s Nyaminyami district want Government to set up at least one Vocational Training Centre, saying such an initiative will help to empower the local community.

A satellite training centre that was once in the district has been closed for some time.

Nyaminyami Ward 4 councillor, Mr Fortunate Mafweda, said school leavers were being denied an opportunity to develop their skills.

“We once had a satellite centre in the area, but it is no longer operational,” he said.

“As of now, we want Government to re-open that satellite one so that youths can find something to occupy themselves with .”

The nearest VCT is in Magunje, which is over 150 kilometres away.

Said Cllr Mafweda: “In the long run, Government should construct the first vocational training centre. But the residents also want access to Government services such as birth and national registration centres.

“Further, they want police to open a police post at Gache Gache Fishing Camps to reduce crime, including poaching. Youths are often blamed for most crimes plaguing the area.”

Nyaminyami Rural District Council chairperson Mr Lovemore Negande said local villagers had since approached council to push for the establishment of the police post.

“Gache Gache Ward 2 community has appealed to us to facilitate the establishment of a police post at the fishing camp,” he said.

Council, Mr Negande said, acquired a speed boat as a temporary measure to monitor fishing activities in the area.

“We have acquired a speed boat for patrols and council game scouts will be monitoring Gillnet fishing activities in all fishing camps,” he said.

Mr Negande urged residents to work with council to combat fish poaching.

A villager, Mrs Evelyn Shemira, said Government needed to consider establishing a Grain Marketing Board collection point in the area.

“We are appealing to our Government to establish collection points close to us,” she said.

“The closest GMB depot is at Magunje Growth Point, about 220 kilometres from Siakobvu.”
