No election dates yet, says PM

A Presidential or general election is called by Presidential proclamation.
Responding to questions from journalists at Harvest House, Mr Tsvangirai said: “If you are looking for a date, I don’t have a date. There are specific steps set by Sadc that we have to follow — that is completion of the constitution-making process and holding of a referendum. That is the roadmap that we have to follow and if you are looking for a date, I am sorry I cannot give you a specific date,” he said.
The inclusive Government, which has a life-span of 24 months, is set to lapse next year after which elections are expected to be held under the dictates of the envisaged new constitution.
The MDC-T leader condemned the violence that characterised outreach meetings in Harare over the weekend.

“The resurgence of violence is disturbing, much as it is regrettable for it simply derails our national path to a new dispensation. Violence and intolerance have no place in such a revered guide, which should bind us as a family in a community of nations,” he said.

Meanwhile, police have dismissed claims by the MDC-T that one Crispen Mandizvidza, who died in Harare yesterday, after being attacked by unknown assailants on Sunday was a victim of political violence.
MDC-T spokesperson Mr Nelson Chamisa said Mandizvidza was one of their members and was attacked by Zanu-PF supporters in Mbare.
But chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena said they were still investigating the case.

“We had a report at Mbare Police Station this morning that Crispen Mandizvidza, who is aged around 23, had died at a local hospital after succumbing to injuries he sustained after being assaulted on Sunday and investigations are now in progress,” he said.

To the contrary, Snr Asst Comm Bvudzijena said Mandizvidza’s friend said they were attacked on Sunday night on their way from work as they walked along Rakajani Street in Mbare.
No formal report was made to the police and Mandizvidza was taken to a local hospital for treatment but died yesterday.

“This then prompted the friend to make a report today (yesterday) at Mbare Police Station and we have since launched an investigation on the case as the motive behind the murder is still not clear. We are starting our investigations from the report,” said Snr Asst Comm Bvudzijena.
