POLICE yesterday said they were aware that some touts were driving commuter omnibuses without driver’s licences.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the force was also aware that some of the kombis had fake registration number plates.
“We have it on record that the so-called hwindis are driving commuter omnibuses without driver’s licences and in most cases, the purported registration numbers that the media mention, would be fake and are removed as soon as the accused person accomplishes his task,” she said.

She was responding to media reports that police should take down commuter omnibus registration numbers instead of chasing them.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba warned kombi drivers that the force will arrest those who breach traffic laws and ensure that justice is done through the courts.

She expressed concern over some local media and individuals whom she accused of peddling lies about the force’s operations.
“Police powers are not debatable in newspapers as they are derived from our constitutional mandate.

‘‘We will not take heed of overzealous back benchers who are in the habit of suggesting how police should perform their work,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.
“We are aware that some of the people who are raising concerns are dubious commuter omnibus operators who play hide and seek with the police and the ZRP will not compromise on their duty.”

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said the force expects journalists to urge motorists who evade police check points, to appeal to them to co-operate.
“We cannot have a lawless country where commuter omnibus drivers can flout rules and regulations and in turn get accolades from the media,” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged motorists to respect all traffic laws and co-operate with the police when stopped at roadblocks.
