New twist to Mukanya’s alleged secret

Mukanya and his local manager Cuthbert Chiromo are suing Godwin Mapfumo for falsehoods and defamation of character following the aspiring musician’s recent claims that he is Mukanya’s son and that the musician has been trying to hide him from family and the public.
Chiromo, who says he has never met Godwin or even spoken to him, says he is a fraud who is trying to mislead the nation.

The Blacks Unlimited manager stormed The Sunday Mail offices to set the record straight last week accompanied by two of Mukanya’s sisters Tabitha and Edith, both based in Harare.
Also in their entourage was Sharon, Godwin’s sister, who happens to share the same father with the “conman”.
This reporter demanded that the crew identify themselves to prove that they were really who they claimed to be, and they did, following which startling revelations about Godwin were made.

The three women poured cold water on Godwin’s claims, saying he was indeed William Mapfumo’s son, Mukanya’s younger brother, but was born out of wedlock.
They all told of how the family had tried to live as one happy family with Godwin, but had failed due to his criminal activities and wayward behaviour.

The testimonies by the three women and Chiromo proved that Godwin had manipulated information to his advantage since he is after all a Mapfumo.
“In the story he gave you he mentions Mitchell, Sharon and Gamuchirai as being Thomas’ and Verna’s children, but in actual fact those are his sisters, William’s children. He also lied about his age and where he grew up, but most of all he put the family name into disrepute,” said Edith.

Mukanya’s sisters said the matter would not have become an issue if Godwin had just gone about his music even singing Mukanya’s music as he is part of the family but are worried at the way he is painting their brother and the whole family black.

“This type of thing portrays our family as a family of liars and cheats — that is what hurts. We have all tried to accommodate Godwin into the family but we have all failed. Some of us, including his siblings, have not seen him in years,” said Tabitha.
Added Sharon (his sister): “We were happy when dad brought us a brother when we were still in Waterfalls. But we were to run into problems with him after he started stealing from us; things like TVs, blankets and radios, anything that could get him a quick buck.

“Through a series of problems including being chased away from home, dad still managed to send him to school hoping that he would change, but we have all given up.”
Godwin is reported by the family as having masqueraded as a prophet in Mt Darwin some time ago before fleeing that place after impregnating an under-age girl.
When contacted by this publication, Godwin stuck to his guns, saying everything he had said was true. However, further investigations by this reporter proved that Chiromo and Mukanya’s sisters were indeed telling the truth about the young man being a “conman” as he failed to take them again to the woman whom he first presented as his biological mother.
“My mother is a sick person and going to her would cause problems both to her health and her marriage and that can lead to her divorce, (ndikazoita ngozi) and I will in turn become possessed by evil spirits,” he said

After some serious interviewing and being told that the matter was now with the country’s law enforcers, Godwin bowed down and confessed that the woman he had brought was not his mother as he had only hired her to perform this “special service” to cement his case.
“Yes the lady I brought to you is not my mother, I just used her to give credence to my story,” he said.-The Sunday Mail
