In an industry that is ever evolving and cut-throat, with few female circular musicians, Sandra Ndebele has defied all odds revealing her staying power and ability to move with the times.

Sandra has come out guns blazing. We know her as the queen of traditional music and dance.

Moving with the times, her music has evolved to House music genre.

Spotting a new look, a complete 360 degree change, Sandra has embraced Kasi swagg in her sound.

She is now Sandra the curvy diva and queen of the jumpsuits.

Her new offerings “Ngoma” and “Tshibilika” featuring Mzoe 7 and “Leeknotic” have taken the music scene by storm and doing well in local chart shows.

Partnering with Andy Cutta to produce high energy and colourful videos, Sandra exudes her dance dominance and is staking her claim that she is still a force to reckon with.

“If you remember Britney Spears dropped out of the music scene for a bit and came back from being this teen star to a more mature pop icon. She embraced the changing of times and so am I am,” said Sandra Ndebele.

Speaking on what brought about this change, Sandra highlighted that she had to re-evaluate herself. As a wife, a mother, an entrepreneur and musician, through going back to school to set a good base for all her upcoming projects, she found it necessary to re-invent herself. And she is also going round various schools donating books to encourage learners to value their education.

“If I had concentrated on my education from the start, I would be far today as a musician and as an entrepreneur. Music is a business and must be treated as such. Not just about entertaining people. And changing my sound to House music was done to embrace the genre that is currently viable and hot.”

Sandra began her career as a high school student at Mpopoma High School with IYASA. She then went her own path as a solo artiste.

With only one album to her name in the early 2000, she shook the showbiz scene and became a centre of attraction.

She also got a good share of criticism as people felt her dances were obscene while her dressing was said to be too revealing for public appearances.

But Sandy braved the waves and pushed her art through. Male fans would flock to her shows to see her in action, obviously lured by her seductive style.

She got contracts to share the stage with big musicians of the time and toured many parts of the country gracing big shows.

She is known for dominating music galas decked in her traditional Ndebele garments and doing the splits.

Sandra’s arrival on the scene was emphatic to the extent of being nominated in the same category with Alick Macheso and Oliver Mtukudzi for the Best Live Act award at Zimbabwe Music Awards.

In 2003, she won the Best Female Artiste Award at National Arts Merit Awards and, since the beginning of Harare International Carnival, she has scooped the Best Carnival Act Award at all her appearances.

She became a prominent feature at national music galas where she stole the limelight on numerous occasions.

Because of her resilience, she got many endorsement deals and is currently ambassador for Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, National Blood Service Zimbabwe, Mpilo Hospital and Suzuki.

Sandra has toured various countries that include Russia, Germany, Canada, Japan, China and United Kingdom among others.

Sandra now dons a more modern look and has a high energy dance sound. She is currently working on a new album, which will see her feature not only Zimbabwean collaborations but as far afield as West Africa.

Recently the musician celebrated outstanding achievements when she scooped two accolades at the Bulawayo Arts Awards and also inked a deal with a US music publishing company OMG Studios.

A part of the deal will see her music made available for sale on music streaming services such as iTunes and Spotify.

Sandra said she is enjoying her new style and the music has been accepted by regional radio and television stations.

She has staged energetic shows in Harare and Bulawayo over the past few weeks and made lasting impressions.

She is looking forward to working on another single as she continues on her new journey.

A number of collaborations are also in the pipeline while promoters are signing her for shows that feature international artistes.

Despite her age, Sandra remains energetic and her studio works are improving. She has created a new fan base that is likely to determine her future in the music industry.

As enterprising as she has always been, Sandra also continues to pursue businesses in different lines.

She says balancing her various roles will not be a problem and she is determined to take her music to a higher level.
