A new record company, Discovery Records, has opened in Harare. The company, which is along Lytton Road in Workington, mainly targets upcoming musicians that have not recorded before. Studio officials said they are scouting for talent in various parts of the country to give a chance to talented musicians that are still doing their art at grassroots level.

“We are very open and we do not discriminate between genres.

“Our first projects will be done free of charge because we know there are many aspiring musicians that cannot afford to pay for studio time,” said one of the officials.

However, the official said they would not completely shut out musicians that have recorded before because they understood problems that musicians face with some of the existing companies.

“We are doing a research to establish major problems that musicians face at established record companies.

“There have been numerous reports about musicians moving from one company to the other and we will look into those issues and try to come up with solutions where possible

“The problem of piracy and royalties is everywhere, but we will ensure we come up with programmes that make both parties happy.”
The official said the company is looking at the long-term gains of engaging and promoting upcoming artistes.

“We are not looking for immediate returns.

“We believe in nurturing talent before considering returns.

“The majority of musicians worked for long before getting recognition.

“It needs someone to have confidence in the unknown musician if we are to have more big musicians in the country.”

The company’s first projects belong to Zoey Sifelani and Shiga Shiga. The duo would be launching their albums on one night on February 14 at Private Lounge.

Zoey released a single from her album yesterday.
