JOHANNESBURG. — The National Council of Trade Unions (Nactu) has resolved to support the PAC and EFF in this year’s general election, the trade union federation said yesterday.
Nactu had invited political parties to present their 2014 manifestos to the federation’s central committee on March 18, general secretary Narius Moloto said in a statement.

The parties which attended were the Azanian People’s Organisation, the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), the United Democratic Movement and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Nactu held a central committee meeting on Sunday in Johannesburg where the decision to support the two parties was taken.

“Nactu resolved to endorse the manifestos of the PAC and EFF as those were rooted in the interests of the workers,” Moloto said.

“The central committee meeting… further resolved that Nactu shop stewards will volunteer their time to the PAC and EFF as party agents where necessary and engage in campaign activities to recruit voters for these two parties.”

The trade union federation’s affiliates, which includes the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, would communicate the decision to their members and encourage them to participate and campaign as well.

“We implore all our members to use their vote wisely and vote the PAC or EFF based on their individual choices,” said Moloto. — Sapa.
