Mutasa and company the real threats to Zim Cde Mutasa

Godwin Gomwe Correspondent
THE year 2014 was a year of remarkable political restructuring. It was through it that our nation begun the process of healing from the effects of betrayal and deceit from some of our most influential leaders. These unfortunate circumstances taught us valuable lessons like how often most leaders become too comfortable in their positions and in so doing forget the simplest rule in basic politicking which is that everyone is replaceable.

I had the unfortunate privilege of reading the Press statement issued by some of the recently dismissed zanu-pf leaders and in receiving a copy of Cde Didymus Mutasa’s letter to the Sadc Chairman.

After reading both these texts I had a very unsettling feeling of how our fellow comrades who once held key positions in zanu-pf have gone astray beyond rehabilitation.

The idea of being demoted or dismissed from a political position is disheartening but not at all complex: it is a simple test of one’s endurance and whether or not they are fully committed to the cause.

It is a question as to whether one will play the humble position of an individual willing to be corrected and disciplined or the opposite which is obviously becoming a rebel and in very unfortunate situations renegade.

Evidenced by the aforementioned documents, it is very clear that the latter is highly likely with respect to Mutasa and those that think like him, and for whom he purports to speak.

The Press statement begins by referring to how these ousted leaders would like to restore the image of zanu-pf which in itself is a very inappropriate point to make since the zanu-pf image had been largely tarnished by their presence.

Anyone with a basic knowledge of politics knows that there is nothing more disgraceful than a party Ied by corrupt and inconsiderate individuals and nothing more embarrassing than those same people claiming to have the capability of restoring the image of dignity and patriotism which their faces are no longer associated with.

The same Press statement refers to how these former leaders are dismayed at how they were treated before, during and after the zanu-pf 6th National People’s Congress.

I am still in search of the reason as to why they would be dismayed by the actions taken against them when they were leading an internal political faction.

Such things obviously have consequences and the only people who should have been “dismayed” were the Zimbabweans if no action against this sort of behaviour had been taken.

The Press statement contained many points which I cannot go through individually so I will focus on some of the key points which I am certain need to be looked at.

A good example is a part written “we believe that if zanu-pf allows this to go unchallenged, we would be indirectly posing a threat to the National Constitution of the Republic of Zimbabwe”.

The fragile and almost explosive tension that was in the party before the 6th National People’s Congress caused primarily if not solely by the emergence of factionalism was clearly the greatest threat to the National Constitution of our Republic in history.

It is very strange therefore that these individuals all of a sudden now have great concern of what may be and what may not be a threat to our beloved nation.

So far, the only threat we have seen in this regard besides the attempted Western influence through opposition parties in Zimbabwe has been this group of over-ambitious and treacherous comrades.

It was also stated in the statement that the votes of no-confidence came late and were only given to the people loyal to former Vice President Joice Mujuru and apparently this appears to be a problem for the Press statement authors.

Personally, I find it a bit awkward to make such a point because votes of no-confidence regardless of the time-frame are submitted when a particular leader is under-performing and who else suits this description than people who were not doing anything tangible for the people but instead focused their time and resources in building an internal faction for personal interests?

I also managed to find some of the segments a bit disturbing if not disrespectful to the Zimbabwean citizens and President Mugabe.

It is mentioned that The First Lady was preaching to “youths and a traumatised impoverished population”.

This same “traumatised”, “impoverished population” is the same one that elected those leaders into power.

It is the same traumatised impoverished population that they so badly abandoned while building their blocks to an imaginative new political reign in Zimbabwe.

Now they pay attention to the poverty the citizens are experiencing, problems they should have solved while they held the most powerful positions in the country.

I initially doubted whether the Dr Joice Mujuru, Cde Mutasa and the rest would team up with opposition parties, but it has turned from a mere possibility to an overwhelming reality.

And there are even rumours of the rebels’ visits to different African countries to visit witchdoctors in search of a charm that can help them and the opposition to overthrow the President of Zimbabwe.

In a direct attack on the President, the Press statement says President Mugabe has been robbed of “his legacy as a unifier, a rational thinker …”

In simpler terms the authors are saying the President does not think rationally anymore, a quote that would make perfect sense coming from the leader of the MDC as opposed to a group of individuals who are still considering themselves zanu-pf.

It is my conclusion therefore, from the above submissions, that the President took a bold step in cleansing the Government of moulds which had begun to corrupt the ideals of the party and the axed leaders are not doing anything at all to improve their relationship with zanu-pf or the people of Zimbabwe as a whole.
