MUSHOWANI Stars coach Jostein Mathuthu has been relieved of his duties after just three matches in charge as the club continues to struggle in the Northern Region Division One Soccer league.

Mathuthu took over from Solomon Mudavanhu, who started the season with the team but was sacked after 10 games for poor results and the former has been fired for the same reason.

The former Lengthens and CAPS United coach was in charge of the team for three games before he was suspended for Saturday’s game against Black Rhinos in Madziva with club general-secretary Jestina Mutasa citing security reasons as she said the supporters were not happy with the coach and they had to leave him behind.

Their senior player Lawrence Makoni took charge of the game and they won 3-1. They are currently sixth with 20 points and they are 14 points behind log leaders Ngezi Platinum.

Mushowani Stars owner Lovemore Nyakasoka revealed that they had fired Mathuthu and his assistant after holding an executive meeting yesterday.

“He has failed. When he signed the contract we told him that in every three games he needs to get seven points but he managed to get just one point. He failed to meet the standard of coaching we expected. Anyway, he is a good coach, I don’t blame him but he failed,” said Nyakasoka.

Of late the club has been facing financial problems and Nyakasoka indicated that the club is up for sale since he is no longer able to fund the Northern Region franchise. And the financial challenges might have contributed to the team’s poor results considering that last year they were among the strong contenders. However, Nyakasoka said they had provided all that was needed for the coaches to produce results and added that Makoni would continue as player-coach until they find Mathuthu’s replacement.
