Mushayakarara laid to rest

banker, economist and business executive Mr Elisha Mushayakarara, who died on Sunday, was buried yesterday at Greendale Cemetery in a State-assisted funeral.

Mr Mushayakarara (71) died after a five-year battle with cancer of the colon.

Government officials, business associates, friends and relatives thronged the cemetery to pay their last respects.

Speaking at the funeral, Harare Metropolitan Provincial Minister Cde Miriam Chikukwa said Mr Mushayakarara lived an exemplary life.

“On behalf of President Mugabe, we are saddened by the death of Mr Mushayakarara, who has fought a good fight,” she said.

“Good deeds will follow you to the grave and so will bad ones, so being accorded a State assisted funeral shows that he was a true civil servant.”

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Dr John Mangudya described Mr Mushakayarara as a mentor who continued contributing immensely to the country after his retirement.

“He was our a friend and our mentor, he used to advise us,” he said.

“He left a legacy and we are going to continue referring to his lessons.”

Secretary for Finance Mr Willard Manungo said Mr Mushayakarara was a principled colleague and a man of great faith.

“When we spoke about the country’s economic challenges, he told me that they were not problems, but transitory challenges which would come to pass,” he said.

Mr Mushayakarara was part of a 1966 Commonwealth initiative that sought to prepare black Rhodesians to run the country.

He briefly joined Zambia’s public service, staying there for 12 years while he furthered his education. He was secretary for national supplies in the Ministry of Finance (Zimbabwe) from 1982-84, Senior Secretary for Finance (1984-93) and group chief executive of ZB from 1993 to 2013.

Mr Mushayakarara served as Bankers Association of Zimbabwe president for two terms and was part of the pioneers of the Chitungwiza dual carriageway construction.

At the time of his death, Mr Mushayakarara had retired from ZB Financial Holdings after serving as group chief executive officer for 20 years.
