Midlands State University (MSU) is set to open a satellite technical institute in Mangwe District in September, which will see students from the area enrolling in three technical courses.

Mangwe Constituency National House of Assembly Member Cde Obedingwa Mguni said lessons were going to be temporarily conducted at Bhulu High School in Mangwe District.

He said the university had been allocated two hectares of land by Mangwe Rural District Council for purposes of constructing the institution.

“Mangwe Rural Technology Institute, which will operate as a subsidiary of MSU is due to open in September and the university will begin enrolling students anytime soon. The university will enrol students from the district and surrounding areas.

“Two hectares of land in Ingwizi have been allocated for purposes of constructing the college. In the meantime, lessons are going to be conducted at Bhulu High School. There is a classroom block, which was lying idle in the school and it has been renovated for purposes of accommodating college students,’’ he said.

The legislator said there is an understanding with MSU for the new college to start by offering courses in mining, agriculture and fishery. Cde Mguni, who is also the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, said more courses relevant to Mangwe District and neighbouring areas were going to be introduced.

He said MSU was going to partner with the business community, locals living overseas, Potraz and other organisations to assist in constructing the college.

Cde Mguni said the institution would go a long way in providing youths from the district and surrounding areas with an opportunity to access higher education.

“Youths from the district and surrounding areas and even Botswana will be able to enrol with this institute as well as adults. This initiative is an e-learning programme that will help community members to further their education at a low cost without having to travel long distances to universities.

“Our strategy is to secure affordable accommodation for learners coming from far away places,” he said.

In the long run, the college will be transformed into a fully-fledged university.

Recently, Cde Mguni urged universities and colleges across the country to decentralise their operations to various districts in order to make their services more accessible.

He said tertiary institutions need to open satellites in small towns and introduce courses that are relevant to each specific area.

Cde Mguni also said once secondary school pupils had a tertiary institution in their vicinity, that would motivate them to set their sights higher.
