Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday expressed satisfaction with the quality of products on exhibition at the Harare Agricultural Show.

He toured several stands and interacted with exhibitors.

“It is different from other years,” said VP Mphoko.

“It looks like this year there are more people, more quality of what is being displayed, which is a very good sign that the economy is growing.

“There is no way we are going back because once we reach rock bottom we have to come up again. The farming community should know that the world is hungry, everybody is hungry, including ourselves. We need more crops and then sell to the world after feeding ourselves.

“That is what it means. That means the market is there, so we have to work hard for the market.”

VP Mphoko was accompanied by Zimbabwe Agriculture Society chief executive Dr Anxious Masuka during the tour.

Some of the stands he toured included the Tobacco Research Board, the Tobacco Industry Marketing Board and Zimplats.

VP Mphoko also visited the Seed Co and Gushungo Holdings stands.

The Harare Agricultural Show is an annual event organised by the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society for the promotion of agricultural development.

This year’s edition, which is the 107th, comes at a time Government is forging ahead with Command Agriculture, expected to boost agriculture production and ensure food sufficiency.

Together with the Presidential Inputs Scheme and good rains realised in the 2016 /17 farming season, Command Agriculture has been accredited for the bumper harvest that is expected to bring the country back to food self-sufficiency.
