Guruve North House of Assembly representative Brigadier-General (Retired) Epmarcus Kanhanga (Zanu-PF) is rehabilitating boreholes and constructing Blair toilets to ensure the provision of safe water and sanitation in the constituency.
Speaking at the commissioning of 61 boreholes at Guruve Rural District Council offices recently, Rtd Brig-Gen Kanhanga said safe water and sanitation were his major priorities.

He said there was an outbreak of cholera in 2008 because people were using dirty water.
“We want to work with all stakeholders so that we drill new boreholes and rehabilitate the existing ones. We are also going to establish watering points for livestock at Mukuwa, Nyamuda and Mupinge rivers among others, he said.

Rtd Brig-Gen Kanhanga said he would also spearhead road maintenance and construction of clinics in the constituency.
“We have received a grader from Government and the District Development Fund has another one which we can use for road maintenance,” he said.

Guruve Rural District Council chief executive Mr Tinos Marisa, said 366 boreholes in his area of jurisdiction were fully functional while 113 need rehabilitation.

“We have made submissions to the Department of Infrastructural Development requesting funding and we received US$161 000 which we used to repair some of the boreholes,” he said.

Mr Marisa said a water and sanitation assessment revealed that most newly resettled farmers did not have access to safe water.
“The former commercial farmers had electric-powered boreholes which are no longer functional. We are also going to set aside 59 percent of the development levies towards water and sanitation,” he said.
