Two pupils from Sunningdale 1 Primary School, Harare, died on the spot while another was seriously injured when a motorist lost control of his vehicle and hit the pupils near a gate to the school.

The accident occurred during lunch hour while the pupils were on their way home.

The injured pupil was rushed to hospital where he was reported to be in a critical condition.

The incident comes hard on the heels of a similar case in May in which a commuter omnibus driver ran over and killed a Form Four pupil at Girls High School.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident.

“The vehicle, a blue Toyota Avensis registration number AEE1734, was being driven by Ben Kabudura of Unit L, Chitungwiza and he was speeding. He lost control of the vehicle and it encroached into the opposite lane before it later encroached onto a cycle track.

“During the process, the vehicle hit three boys and two of them died on the spot. One of them was seriously injured and is in a critical condition,” she said.

An eyewitness who declined to be named said the driver of the vehicle was speeding before he lost control of the vehicle.

“The car was coming from town heading towards Chitungwiza. I was alerted by an abnormal sound that must have been the moment his car flew over the concrete demarcation along the road crossing over to where we were.

“The only thing I could do was to run away from danger as fast as I could only to realise afterwards that the car had knocked down school pupils,” said the eyewitness.

When The Herald arrived at the scene, police were still to collect the bodies.

Only one of the pupils had been positively identified.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said Kabudura would face culpable homicide charges.

“We would also want to appeal to motorists to avoid speeding and exercise caution especially when driving near schools or built-up areas. They should approach with caution. This is a very sad incident,” she said.

Kabudura was yesterday still assisting police with investigations.
