ZIMBABWEAN motor racing fans are in for a treat this weekend at Donnybrook Raceway in Harare where they will be spoilt to a double dose of track racing events on Saturday and Sunday. First on the menu card will be the penultimate round of the four-round 2014 Telecel Drag Racing Series on Saturday and it will be followed by the fourth round of this year’s National Motocross Championship the day after.

Just like the drag racing meet on Saturday, Sunday’s National Motocross Championship also promises to be an exciting event as it brings together all the top local riders who will be battling it out for the top honours in the different classes in which they will be competing in.

According to Shaun Whyte, the chairman of the Bogwheelers Club, who run motocross in this country, Sunday’s meet will be the last big event before they send a Zimbabwe team to this year’s edition of the FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championship scheduled for Kitwe, Zambia, on August 30 and 31.

“This Sunday’s event is the fourth round of our National Championship series and all (the top) guys will be out to collect points in their different classes.

“Interestingly, there’s a lot of stiff competition in our junior ranks this year although young Daiyaan Manuel is way out in front in the 50cc Class as he has also been racing in South Africa.

“In the 65cc Class, Davin Cocker has been dominating but young Mudiwa Chigumba has been putting in some strong performances and giving his opponents a good run for their money,” Whyte said.

In fact, the competition is really tight in the 65cc A Class as the likes of two other talented young riders – Reagan Bond and Tristan Grainger – are also in contention.

Grainger will be back in action on Sunday after having fully recovered from an injury to his arm, which he broke two meetings away in South Africa.

Another gifted young rider Kuda Mhene (Jnr) is also coming up very strong in this class after having carried the country’s flag high during the East African Motocross Championship at Entebbe, Uganda, in May where he came out first in all his races.

Entry fee for the spectators for Saturday and Sunday has been pegged at US$5 per car.
