ZIMBABWE’S Champions League representatives Motor Action finally left for Madagascar in the early hours yesterday for the return leg of their preliminary round tie against Cnaps Sports on Sunday.
The Mighty Bulls’ delegation, which included 18 players and seven officials, left aboard a Kenyan Airways flight via Nairobi.
They were expected to arrive in Antananarivo by midday.
Officials at the Motor Action Sports Club confirmed the team’s departure and the delegation is being led by team owner Eric Rosen. The Harare businessman had earlier this week indicated that the team could fail to travel after encountering problems in their bid to secure funds for the airfares. It was only after convincing their travel agent that they would pay for the tickets, when they come back home, that the journey materialised.
But they had to be forced to slash their delegation.
Rosen had earlier indicated that they wanted to travel with 28 people but only 25, including chief of protocol Simeon Jamanda, director Liz Rosen and the coaching staff, made the trip. The Mighty Bulls have plans to train this morning after taking a rest yesterday.
Joey Antipas’ men are in danger of elimination at the first hurdle as they trail 0-1 to Cnaps Sports after losing at home to the little-known Malagasy side two weeks ago.
Motor Action need to win the match at all costs to secure their place in the first round where, if Sunday’s result go in their favour, they are most likely to meet former Champions Asec Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire.
The 1998 champions Asec played in the preliminary round this season because of their poor form in recent years.
But the Ivorians demolished Mauritius outfit ASC SNIM 7-0 in the first leg of the preliminary round two weeks ago.
