Harare City Council is set to give World Boxing Council international welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi, a residential stand in one of the city’s low-density suburbs in honour of his exploits in the ring. Manyuchi recently claimed the scalp of Giancula Frezza of Italy in his second defence of his WBC title. During a full council meeting on Thursday, Rugare and Lochnivar councillor Peter Moyo said Manyuchi was a gallant fighter who raised the country’s flag high hence he deserved to be rewarded.

“We must give him something special, a residential stand in the medium-density or low-density suburb will do to honour him as a sports ambassador.

“The previous council gave Comrades Marathon multiple winner Stephen Muzhingi a residential stand for his exploits. We must be seen to be supporting sport,” he said.

He castigated the zimra officials who confiscated Manyuchi’s trophy and passport demanding that he declare the trophy.

“That was very embarrassing for zimra to demand tax from someone who had represented the country well abroad,” he said.

zimra later released the trophy and passport after the intervention of airport authorities.

Manyuchi retained his title after pummelling Frezza into submission in the sixth round of their 12th round bout in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy and received $9 000 for his exploits.

Majubheki Mbare councillor, Martin Matinyanya, said the city must recognise sportsmen who raise the country’s flag high in various disciplines.

“Let us be seen uplifting sports, I second councillor Moyo’s proposal that we give him a residential stand in the medium or low density areas of the city,” he said.

Mabvuku councillor Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi, suggested that the city also names a street in Manyuchi’s honour.

Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni concurred with the contributions and asked corporate services and housing director Mrs Josephine Ncube to implement the council resolution.

On Thursday President Mugabe honoured Manyuchi at a banquet at State House where he gave the boxer $50 000 for flying the national flag high.

President Mugabe said Manyuchi’s achievements were a source of pride for the country and needed to be celebrated.

“Charles Manyuchi’s victory is certainly not just for himself, it is a world victory for Zimbabwe and Zambia, for sadc and Africa,” he said.
