Newly-crowned Miss World Zimbabwe Emily Katanga Kachote says the secret behind her victory at Mermaids Pool in Shamva over the weekend was a combination of hard work and confidence.

The 25-year-old financial advisor said she worked hard in preparing for the contest and believed she would win, even before she walked the ramp.

Ann-Grace Mutambu (19), came out as first princess while Chengetai Kanonhuwa (18) was the second princess.

Speaking shortly after being crowned Miss World Zimbabwe, Kachote said she had worked hard to achieve that goal and it was no surprise to her that she won.

“I came here believing. There was no point coming with the belief that someone else was going to take the crown.

“I knew I would be the queen, even before I was in camp,” she said.

The new queen was selected amongst 15 finalists who were competing for the crown.

Kachote, who describes herself as versatile and adaptable in her Miss World Zimbabwe profile, said it was her second time at Miss Zimbabwe after a failed attempt in 2012.

She said she went back to the drawing board and re-strategised

“I went home and I asked myself many questions.

“If you believe you want something, never apologise for it.

“Just go for it,” she said.

Speaking more on her preparatory stage, Kachote also credited her success to their intensive month-long boot camp in Victoria Falls.

“It was tough but all we did helped me win.

“It helped me to be more eloquent and have confidence in myself,” she said.

The model, who recently tried her hand in acting, said the future looked bright.

Kachote said she now has the opportunity to serve the community.

“I entered this pageant because I want to be an idol for the young ones out there.

“At the same time I feel like I have so much to impart to the other youths and young girls.

“I am very passionate about women and girls, developing them and seeing them achieve their goals,” she said.

For being in the top three, the queen and her princesses were awarded cars and more prizes that organisers promised to avail in the next few days.

The event was characterised by glamour with guests from various sectors including business, Government, fashion and modelling.

Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services minister, Supa Mandiwanzira, was the guest of honour.

He congratulated the organisers for pulling off the good event.

“I want to congratulate Mai Chiwenga (Miss Zimbabwe Trust Chairperson) and the entire Miss Zimbabwe Trust.

“Tonight is not about the beauty pageant only.

“It is a show of inspiration.

“It is a show of confidence to all young girls out there to stand up and be counted,” he said.

Notable figures in the audience included Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive officer Karikoga Kaseke, reigning Carnival Queen Gamuchirai Kujeke and her predecessor Dananai Chipunza.

There was also South Africa-based renowned designer Spero Villioti, the pageant’s national patron Kiki Divaris and former beauty queen Malaika Mushandu, among others.

Entertainment was provided by Leonard Zhakata, Trevor Dongo, Mudiwa Mutandwa and Amazulu Cultural Group.
