The country will hold the first ever Miss United Nations pageant this year after the international organisers issued a licence to regional television personality Josey Mahachi.

Mahachi, who hosts a lifestyle programme “Click Africa” on M-Net, expressed delight over the development saying it was a grand opportunity for the local modelling sector.

“This pageant is huge and life-changing especially for the participants. It is an opportunity to make our mark once again on the global scene.

“Our models need this platform to make a meaningful impact and get exposure to such (high) standards of modelling,” she said.

Mahachi, who is now the national director of the Miss United Nations Zimbabwe, said they have scheduled the pageant for April.

The winner will be the country’s ambassador at the international pageant, Miss United Nations World, that will be held in Jamaica in June.

“Winning the title is just the beginning ofeven bigger things that come with the crown. Besides the grand prizes, the winner will also experience a year of amazing adventures. The reigning world queen is from South Africa,” she said.

The international pageant is now in its sixth year and has other sister pageants, Miss Teen, Miss Tourism United Nations and Mr United Nations among others.

“We will be holding a fund-raising cocktail in Zimbabwe that will formally launch the pageant in our country. It will also be an opportunity to engage potential sponsors and foster partnerships,” she said.

She added that scouting will start this month with further details being released in due course. According to the official United Nations pageants website, the thrust of the contests is to give both men and women the opportunity to come together in a pageant setting regardless of their backgrounds.

The UN pageant delegates work together diligently to leave a positive impact in their communities. They come together and share their community volunteer projects, offer each other solutions and servicing across the globe
