Miss Tourism finals on this weekend

This year’s edition is going to be different from previous finals as the host ushers changes ranging from category rebranding to an improvement on the prize packages for the winners.
The pageant itself is also expected to be bigger and better this time around as the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority has now come of age and are now conversant with world trends.
At the sashing ceremony held at the Rainbow Towers Hotel last week ZTA chief executive officer Karikoga Kaseke announced that the three top models would each walk away with a courtesy car and prize money, among others prizes.

“The top three models are each going to be given a courtesy car, prize money and other various packages.
“It is, however, important to note that the cars are only courtesy cars availed by our various sponsors for the use by the models during their tenure, but after their reign the models are offered the vehicles at a nominal fee,” said Kaseke.

Kaseke said there is also going to be another vehicle for Miss G Tide people’s choice courtesy of G Tide Mobile. This particular model is going to be selected by the general public through voting platforms available on various electronic media.
The category rebranding saw the former queen and her two princesses’ sequence being renamed to Miss Zimbabwe, Miss Tourism Zimbabwe and Miss Universe Zimbabwe. The three will represent Zimbabwe on their respective contests.

Kaseke announced this year’s prize money, which will see the queen pocketing US$3 500, while Miss Tourism Zimbabwe would get US$3 000.
The latter will also be attached to Air Zimbabwe during the course of her reign.
Miss Universe Zimbabwe will get US$2 000 as her prize money.

The top three models would also be getting monthly allowances of US$600, US$550 and US$500 respectively. After the sashing ceremony, the 35 models drawn from all over the country commenced the camping exercise that has seen them travelling to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins in Masvingo for familiarisation with the nation’s resorts.
During the two-week-long camping period, the girls are under strict security conditions which only allow them 20 minutes per visit to ensure proper tutoring.
In an interview with the Sunday Mail Leisure last week, ZTA’s head of public relations and corporate communications Sugar Chagonda said the familiarisation process would give the girl an insight into what is expected of them.

“Through their visits to various resorts the girls get to understand their task as ambassadors in depth so that when they get to the world stage they are true ambassadors of the nation,” he said.
Chagonda also took the opportunity to repair ZTA’s battered image and said the idea was not only to bring the Miss World crown home but being present at the world contest was also an achievement.
“Before ZTA took over the pageant Zimbabwe had never won the crown and we should not act as if the standards of the pageant have fallen since then.
“Our success cannot be judged by bringing the crown home but instead, the crown is a bonus because being in camp for a month with people from all over the world alone is an achievement as we would have done enough to market ourselves as a safe tourist destination,” he said.-The Sunday Mail
