Minority groups call for recognition

Airing their views on the writing of the new constitution, a majority of residents indicated that they need devolution of power, arguing that it was the only way marginalised communities would benefit from their own resources.

Some participants called for the creation of five provinces divided on the basis of people’s cultural backgrounds. At some venues in urban wards, people appeared to have shunned the meetings as characterised by low attendance during the outreach programme.

It was the Constitution Select Committee (Copac’s) first day in the district and the outreach ends on October 1.

Despite the delay in the start of meetings at venues visited, the process generally went on well.

Participants at the various venues suggested that individual provinces rule themselves through provincial governors elected by the people.
