Government has received a donation of two vehicles and ICT equipment worth $120 000 from the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to improve the operations of the Ministry of Rural Development, Preservation and Promotion of Culture and Heritage.

Speaking at a handover ceremony in Harare recently, Minister of Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of Culture and Heritage Cde Abednico Ncube said the donation would help improve the day-to-day operations of his ministry. The donation consisted of two Toyota Land cruisers, 10 laptop computers, three desktop computers and other ICT accessories.

The donation, Cde Ncube said, would strengthen his ministry’s role in monitoring of rural local authorities dotted around the country’s 60 districts. “I can promise the vehicles are going to be put to good use for the benefit of the disadvantaged rural communities,” said Cde Ncube.

Unicef country representative Dr Mohamed Ayoya pledged to continue supporting the ministry as part of the agency’s mission to offer developmental assistance.

“We appreciate working with you and we assure you that as UNICEF we will try our best to give support whenever it is needed,” he said.

The Ministry of Rural Development, Preservation and Promotion of Culture and Heritage faces numerous challenges, including lack of resources, staff and vehicles to carry out its mandate.
