The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Harare Metropolitan Province, Miriam Chikukwa has applauded musician Dereck Mpofu for coming up with “And the Churches go Green” album which raises awareness on environmental issues. At least 25 churches took part in the album and these include Seventh Day Adventist, Reformed Church of Zimbabwe, Methodist Church in Zimbabwe among others.Addressing church leaders and their congregants at the launch of the album in the capital over the weekend, Minister Chikukwa thanked all the churches that took part saying Christians are the custodians of the environment and promised Government’s support towards the initiative.

“My office for Harare Metropolitan Province is responsible for coordinating, supervising, monitoring and evaluating all programmes and projects within the province. I am therefore pleased to inform you that we will be taking special interest in the “The Churches Go Green” project. As Christians we are the custodians of the environment as the bible says in Genesis 2 verses 8-9,” she said.

Minister Chikukwa highlighted that the album will go a long way in raising awareness on environmental matters.

“I am reliably informed that 25 churches came together to do an environmental album singing in their genres to appeal to their church members. I understand that this album, led and produced by the Green Ambassador Dereck Mpofu shall raise awareness within the church on environmental issues, including the sustainable management of our resources and conservation in general,” she said.

Meanwhile, some of the churches that took part in the initiative like Apostolic Flames Ministries in Zimbabwe led by Bishop Oliver Chipunza promised to continue taking part in the environment issues saying they will at least have one street which they will clean every month and buy bins.

The event was also attended by the Mayor of Harare Councillor Bernard Manyenyeni who also applauded the Green Ambassador for coming up with the noble initiative which he said will go a long way in keeping the City of Harare clean.
