LONDON. – Microsoft is making a last ditch attempt to convince users of Windows 8.1 and earlier to make the jump to Windows 10 before the free upgrade period ends – with full screen reminders. The technology firm has said that it will be pushing the full screen purple pop-up adverts to appear on the screens of those running Windows 7 to Windows 8.1.“Sorry to interrupt, but this is important,” the message reads.

“This notification is a reminder that the Window 10 free upgrade offer ends on July 29, 2016. Microsoft recommends that you upgrade to Windows 10 before the offer expires,” Microsoft said in a blog post.

“You can choose to upgrade directly from the notification, dismiss the notification permanently, or choose to be reminded later.

Microsoft also said that the notifications will only reach certain users. Those whose computer has been detected to be incompatible with Windows 10, or have uninstalled the software after upgrading are among the criteria for not receiving the message.

After July 29, anyone wishing to upgrade to Windows 10 will have to pay £99 in order to do so.

Then on August 2, the Anniversary Update – the first major update to Windows 10 – will become available for free to everyone who has already made the jump to Windows 10.

At the moment that is around 300 million people.

But the reason Microsoft is still keen for users to upgrade is because their target is to get the software running on a billion devices within three years. – BT.com
