Gospel musician Mathias Mhere says his nominations on the National Merit Awards came as relief after critics had a lot of bad things about his previous album “Anoita Minana”.
The album that brought the musician on lime light faced criticism from with some artists saying the hit song “Favour” was not originally Mhere’s.

Yesterday Mhere said everything happens for a purpose adding that all that happened last year took him to greater heights.

The musician has been nominated for the outstanding album together with Guspy Warrior and Jah Prayzah.

His song “Ziya Rangu” has been nominated for the outstanding song locking horns with “Seunononga” from Guspy and “Tsviriyo” from Jah Prayzah.

“A lot happens in people’s lives and it is health because without those backslides we don’t work to achieve better things,” said Mhere.

Born and bred in Gutu, Mhere never imagined he would command such influence nationwide.

For a man who started off playing worn-out pots (zvingwendere) in his rural home, sharing the stage with his childhood hero, Machanic Manyeruke recently was a dream come true.

Raised in a Christian family, Mhere has always had a penchant for music. While in Gutu, he would sing in church, herding cattle or working in the garden.

“I teamed up with my siblings and we organised our small band. My parents never took us seriously; they thought it was juvenile delinquency,” he said.
