MUSHOWANI Stars captain Zivanai Mhanda was crowned the World Navi Northern Region Division One Soccer Star of the Year in Harare last night. The attacking midfielder had an outstanding season with the Madziwa side.

The midfielder beat the challenge of 10 other contestants who were in the race to bag the big award.

He garnered 32 votes when the panellists converged to choose the cream of the Northern Region Division One league.

“I worked hard and I had my targets when the season began and it is something I believe pushed me throughout the season,” said Mhanda.

“When the season began, I just told myself that I needed to improve from my performance last year and that helped me improve. It is an honour to win the accolade and this will give me more pressure to work even harder next year. I have always wanted to play soccer professionally and that always gives me the strength to wake up everyday and go for training. Everyone, including my family members, will be happy if I make it on the international arena,” said Mhanda.

The star midfielder is unlikely to stay in Division One next year with a lot of Premiership clubs, including champions Dynamos, reported to be pursuing his signature. But first he has to try his luck with Japanese side Vissel Kobe and may sign a professional contract with the J-League side if he impresses.
