Three suspected MDC-T supporters who allegedly petrol-bombed Zanu-PF Harare Provincial Youth League chairperson Cde Godwin Gomwe’s house in Budiriro last month were yesterday denied bail by a Harare magistrate.Tendai Muchekahanzu (38), Stephen Dalaina (26) and Victor Munhuwani (36) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe facing charges of malicious damage to property.

Mr Mahwe said the State had managed to convince the court that the three were not proper candidates for bail before he deferred the matter to May 19.

Prosecutor Ms Sharon Mashavira had opposed bail, saying the trio was facing serious charges and that the State was worried that if granted bail, chances were high that they would abscond.

“The evidence against the accused is overwhelming and if they are granted bail the State fears that they might not come to court to stand trial.

“They are also fully aware that they are likely to face a long prison term if they are convicted,” she said.

Ms Mashavira argued that the trio be remanded in custody to avoid any interferences with witnesses.

The prosecution alleges that on April 25 the trio and others still at large went to Cde Gomwe’s house in Budiriro 5B early in the morning.

They allegedly lobbed petrol bombs at Cde Gomwe’s house which failed to explode.

They then threw stones, damaging four windowpanes and denting a door on the garage.

Cde Gomwe’s neighbours allegedly witnessed the incident which was reported to the police.
