MDC-T chairmanship race gets nasty

Party officials — who visited our Bulawayo Bureau on Tuesday — said battle lines have been drawn between camps headed by Mzilikazi Senator Mr Matson Hlalo and State Enterprises and Parastatals Minister Gorden Moyo.

The two are reportedly eyeing the chairman’s post.
“Last week, Senator Hlalo embarked on an extensive campaign in Makokoba and Thorngrove telling residents that they should elect him as Bulawayo MDC-T chairperson instead of Minister Gorden Moyo,” said a party official.

He said Senator Hlalo told residents that Minister Moyo was an outsider hence he should not be voted for.
“Senator Hlalo said Minister Gorden does not come from Bulawayo and Matabeleland in general, but somewhere in Lower Gweru in Midlands Province,” said the party member.
Senator Hlalo is MDC-T Bulawayo vice-chairperson.

The party official added: “ Hlalo also told the residents that Gorden Moyo does not identify with the people of Bulawayo like himself.
“He said he was Bulawayo-born and bred in Mzilikazi.”
The party official said some of the people in Senator Hlalo’s campaign team were councillor McKenzie Sibanda and a Mr Costa Ndlovu.

Another party official said Senator Hlalo could be also eyeing the Member of the House of Assembly for Makokoba, held by Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe.
“He said residents should not vote for women while men were there,” said the party official.
Senator Hlalo denied that he was eyeing the provincial chairmanship.
“I don’t know anything and I don’t remember saying such remarks about Minister Moyo,” he said.

Minister Moyo was said to be in India.
His personal assistant, a Mr T Nare said he could neither confirm nor deny that his boss was campaigning for the chairman’s post.
“As a party we say that post should be occupied by anyone who qualifies. That is all I can say,” said Mr Nare.-Chronicle
