The country’s most talented Mbira outfits, Mbira DzeNharira and Maungira eNharira make a rare collaboration on stage as they join forces for the Bira reMukwerera show scheduled for the Book Café tonight. While it is clear there is no competition between the two groups, traditional music lovers are in for a special treat as they get the best of both worlds with the union.

“Fans should expect fireworks as we are playing in the bira that is meant to invoke the spirits to open up the skies so we can have enough rains. It certainly isn’t a competition to outclass each other but is rather spiritual.

Together with Mawungira eNharira, we will rock like old friends,” said Mbira DzeNharira leader Tendai “Samaita” Gahamadze.

The traditionalist could not disclose who would perform first but simply urged fans to come through early to experience the whole event.

No supporting acts have been billed to perform, keeping the attention on the two great outfits.

“We have not shared the stage with Maungira Enharira for a while but we will collaborate on songs from the albums we did together. These include “Magamba”, “Ndoenda Kwaambuya”, “Kumakorodzi”. The show will also be characterised by traditional rainmaking chants. It is the power and spirit of the mbira accompanied by specific chantings that will carry the event to greater heights,” he said.

While fans have been anticipating the release of their ninth album for the last couple of months the performance will see Mbira DzeNharira performing both old and new songs from the upcoming album.

Meanwhile, spirits are high as well in the Mawungira eNharira camp as the group have been bracing for what they referred to as the biggest bira of the year.

The group that is headed by Mbira DzeNharira product Wilfred “Nyamasvisva” Maafrica has been consistent in the mbira circles.

They are also a celebrated eight-member group and have five albums to their name.

Nyamasvisva said the show will take people down memory lane.

“We will do songs that we did as the original Mbira DzeNharira. We have always had a good relationship with the group and I am happy we will share the microphone with Samaita.

This is a spiritual gig and we will have the blessings of the spirits. It is an important event in our culture and it is also an important musical reunion,” said Nyamasvisva.
