Chitungwiza Mayor Philip Mutoti’s trial, in which he is alleged to have assaulted his wife accusing her of stealing $50 from him, was yesterday postponed to next week.

This was after his lawyer Mr Fred Machokoto sent a note asking the court to push forward the matter since he was busy at the High Court.

Mutoti (44) of St Mary’s, Chitungwiza, denied two counts of domestic violence and harassment when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mrs Renika Dzikiti.

When his trial opened last week, Mutoti’s wife Alice Kuvheya (31) had labelled him a drug addict who abuses Broncleer and marijuana, leading to his abusive nature.

When the court adjourned the last time, Mutoti’s lawyer had asked for the presence of the doctor who examined Kuvheya after her medical affidavit failed to point where she was injured.

Kuvheya had told the court that she had endured an abusive relationship because of her desire to save her marriage.

She further told the court that Mutoti allegedly dragged her inside the house where he choked and assaulted her, saying if she was not taking ARVs, she was “dead”.

Prosecutor Mrs Ntombikayise Nleya alleged that on March 14 this year, Mutoti assaulted Kuvheya accusing her of stealing his $50 and threatened to kill her.
