Top sculptor Eddie Masaya on Wednesday opened a solo exhibition at Alliance Française in Harare featuring a collection of new sculptors and drawings. The exhibition is one of his major shows so far this year where he displays his great artistry using his favourite media on stone as well as on canvas.
Seen by many art lovers as a versatile artist, Masaya draws inspiration from his surroundings and the spiritual life.

Most of his drawings have bright colours, a sign of joy and peace.

His first love was drawing and painting but all that changed when he joined the legendary sculptor John Takawira in 1978 who had a studio in Highlands.

In 1979 Masaya participated in his first group exhibition at the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe’s annual Heritage Exhibition. He entered two pieces.

“After working for some months at Takawira’s studio, I later joined Vhukutirwa Gallery before finally settling in Chitungwiza where I worked with Moses Masaya.

Throughout all these attachments I gained a lot of experience,” he once said.

Following the success of that show, Masaya then decided to go it alone and he started creating his own trademark on stone which later gained international appeal. However, he says creating his own style was not that easy since people didn’t appreciate it from the outset.

As fate would have it, collectors started to enjoy his works after years of perfection with German collectors at the forefront. He was to exhibit 10 pieces in Germany and he became confident in his works.

Since his German exhibition, Masaya has held several shows in England, France, Netherlands and the United States.

Born on May 14, 1960, Masaya has had attachments at the now defunct Chapungu Sculpture Park as well as Dominic Studios as a resident artist.
