A 40-year-old man from Makusha suburb in Shurugwi recently committed suicide by drinking cyanide at his mistress’ home after she had told him that she was no longer interested in the adulterous relationship.

George Ngirazi, who is married, had gone to see his girlfriend, Ms Nyaradzo Mario at the Railway Blocks in Shurugwi, when he committed suicide following an argument. Acting Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident. She said police were still investigating the matter.

“Police in Gweru are investigating a case of sudden death by poisoning where a 40-year-old male adult died after consuming a substance suspected to be cyanide while at his girlfriend’s house in Shurugwi. The now deceased had carried with him a small bottle with some substance when he went to Ms Mario’s house,” she said.

In an interview, the late Ngirazi’s relative, Mr Tawanda Moyo, said he had an argument with his girlfriend after he discovered that she was cheating on him.

“When the two discussed the matter, Mario promised to break up with her other boyfriend,” said Mr Moyo.

He said Ngirazi later discovered that Mario was seeing another man and he decided to commit suicide in protest. Asst Insp Mukwende advised members of the public to always seek the help of mediators when involved in disputes.
